A bluebird is a sight to behold. Who wouldn’t love to see one perched on the kitchen windowsill every morning? But finding one trapped inside a home heating system, now that’s a horror story. Luckily for the one telling this story and the bluebird who stars in it, the horror part of this very tale was erased when the gentle, yet strong hand of a rescuer returned the “bird of happiness” to his natural habitat.
To begin with, I’ll back up to the discovery phase of this tale. As I was walking past our stone hearth one recent afternoon en route to the laundry room, I heard a fluttering sound and simultaneously realized the sound was coming from something live trapped inside our Franco Belge oil heater. (The heater had been off for weeks due to the warm weather.)
At first sight of the flailing, flapping creature I thought it was a bat. Imagine my disbelief when a closer look through the glass door of the stove revealed an orange chest and bright blue body with feathery wings aflutter.
“Oh, my! Oh, my!” was all I could get out before I ran up the stairs yelling for my husband Jim to get down here. “Jim, Jim, quick, there’s a bluebird trapped inside our stove! He must have tumbled down the chimney!”
The bluebird was in as much or more of a panic than we were. “Not a dear little bluebird!” we muttered as we raced around looking for some solution, some way out of this predicament for this innocent creature. We knew he would never make it out of there alive going back the way he came. Not with all the right-angled turns and drops in our stovepipe! We also knew we didn’t want to yank open the door on the stove and have this bird, no matter how cute he was, sailing all through our house.
At last we devised a plan... See the book for the rest of the story.
